  • Just like other branches of the United Sates military, the Marine Corps has a reserve force called the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve (USMCR), which can be called upon in times of war or emergency.

    Eligibility

You don't have to be an ex-member of the military to become a reserve marine. The procedure for joining the USMCR is the same as that for the Marine Corps. Reserve marines only get paid for service and training days.

    Training

Members of the USMCR get the same basic training as the active-duty marines and work alongside them in the same fields. They report for duty and training at their nearest Marine Corps unit.

    Service

USMCR members can hold civilian jobs but are required to report for service and training for one weekend every month and one two-week period each year.

    Time Frame

The minimum required service for reserve marines is eight years, which consists of four to eight years in the USMCR and the rest in the Individual Ready Reserve.

    Benefits

Members of the USMCR are eligible for the same benefits as active-duty marines, including educational benefits, military insurance, access to base facilities and retirement benefits.
