Most people stick to a regular waking schedule. The daily events that occur before going to bed bring irregularity to sleep time. Sleep deprivation can be a serious health detriment. According to the American Medical Association, lack of sleep can even lead to schizophrenia in some cases.
On the Other: Intermittent Sleep Can Be Counterproductive
Hitting the snooze button can actually defeat its purpose. Catching a few extra minutes of sleep might sound enticing, but the disruption in the sleep/wake cycle can confuse the body, physically and mentally. Irregular breathing patterns from interrupted sleep can affect the psychological status of an individual, according to a study conducted by Dr. Ronald D. Chervin, M.D., M.S.
Bottom Line
It's OK to support the need for a little extra sleep by using a snooze alarm, but the long-term effects of using one daily present a certain amount of risk to a person's health. Each individual should use one according to their own needs and health issues.
