RDRAM is an older technology that is no longer supported in general purpose computers. Its latency--- the speed at which data moves in and out of memory---is relatively slow, and its chips produce a substantial amount of heat. Also, DDR is much less expensive per megabyte and can be purchased in larger sizes.

On the Other: Replacing Is Tedious and Expensive

RDRAM motherboards are not compatible with DDR. If you want to make the replacement, you must also replace the motherboard. Unfortunately, RDRAM motherboards also used the 478 CPU (Central Processing Unit) socket, which has been obsolete for several years. So you must buy a new CPU, as well.

    Bottom Line

If you need to add more memory to an RDRAM-based computer, you can still buy RDRAM sticks at online retailers. It is expensive compared to DDR, but it is cheaper than buying the motherboard and CPU that are compatible with DDR-based motherboards.
