  • If you own a surplus electric wheelchair or power chair, you may want to sell it. Be prepared to try more than one method to sell yours, though; the market is limited because factory-warranted, Medicare-subsidized new power chairs are plentiful.

    Local Sales

Ask local resale shops if they'll take your wheelchair on consignment for sale to a private individual. If your local pharmacy sells or rents medical equipment, the store may be willing to buy it or broker its sale for you.

    Health Care Facilities

Check with nursing homes or home care services to see if they'll buy it as reserve equipment. Price it right, though; they may only be interested if they can pay significantly less than they would pay (including the Medicare discount) for a new chair. Most will want you to provide some sort of private warranty.

    Internet Auction and Classifieds

List your chair for sale to subscribers on eBay, Craigslist or another internet service. These services sell nationally and internationally; explain how you are willing to deliver the merchandise in your listing.

    Medical Equipment Resellers

Equipment resellers like Medmarketplace and USA Wheelchairs buy some models of "gently used" equipment over the internet and at physical locations listed in the Yellow Pages. They offer a fraction of the Medicare-discounted price, but it will be an up-front sale with no contingencies or consignments.

    Newspaper or Magazine Ads

Advertise for a private sale in the classified section of a newspaper or magazine. Caregivers or people who don't qualify for Medicare-discounted equipment may buy your chair.
