<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Many resellers consider chia seeds safe
Chia seeds have been consumed by various cultures for centuries. Mayans and Aztecs used chia seeds as a common ingredient. Health food resellers report that chia is free of allergens, is FDA approved as a food and can be eaten without any concern.
On the Other: Chia seeds can disrupt cleansing
Despite their generally healthy properties, Chia seeds can disrupt cleansing and shouldn't be taken while on strict diets that don't permit high-fiber foods. While there are no reported chia allergies, chia side effects can include gas and bloating.
Bottom Line
Though considered to be normally safe, there are specific diets and cleanses with which chia seeds might not work perfectly. If you have any concerns about chia and your diet, it's best to consult a dietitian or health care professional.
