  • Lupus arthritis is a disease that causes the immune system to attack tissues in the body, rather than protect the body from invaders such as infection. This causes illness and damage to the organs and tissues that are attacked and can result in pain and debilitation. Both men and women can get lupus arthritis, but about 90 percent of those who are diagnosed with it are women.

    Determining Factors

Lupus arthritis treatment will be decided based on many factors, including the age of the patient, other medications being taken, the health status of the person, other medical factors, and how severe the disease is.

    Mild

If you have a very mild case of lupus arthritis, you may not require any medication or other medical treatment.

    Medications

Cases of lupus arthritis that are not mild may require medication. Drugs that are used to treat the condition include the steroids Plaquenil (to control flare ups), Cytoxan (a chemo drug that helps lessen the activity of the disease on the immunity), Imuran (treats serious cases), CellCept (especially for people taking Cytoxan), and Rituxan (serious lupus, and used when other medications may not work).

    Life Style

In order to get control and keep control of lupus arthritis, there may need to be some adjustments to lifestyle. Getting enough rest, eating a healthy diet, avoiding alcohol and cigarettes, and getting regular exercise are all important to begin feeling better.

    Cautions

People with lupus arthritis need to take special care to cover up when out in the sun because they are more sensitive to being harmed by direct sunlight. It is also very important to make sure you take care of illness and fevers immediately so they don't cause a flare-up.
