  • Contact lenses are a popular alternative to traditional glasses but they can be dangerous if mishandled. When dealing with your eyes, it is important to act carefully, don't rush and always err on the side of safety. Taking out your contact lenses is easy when you get the hang of it, but it should always be done with full focus and attention.

    Wash Your Hands

This is arguably the most crucial step in the entire process, and yet it's the step most people ignore. It is important that you wash dirt, grime and other irritants off of your hands before bringing them anywhere near contact with your eye. Your eye is extremely sensitive, and can be damaged easily. Wash your hands thoroughly at all times before dealing with contact lenses, and make sure to dry completely.

    Prep Your Case

Open one side of your contact lens case. Opening only one side will prevent confusion and accidentally placing the wrong lens on the wrong side. You should start by removing the contact that you put in first--to help add to the consistency. Fill the case with cleaning solution.

    Secure Your Eyelids

Blinking is a natural reaction, even for experienced contact lens wearers. To help prevent this from becoming an issue, you should use your free hand to pry your lower eyelid down. This will help you fight the urge to blink. Some people find it helpful to pull both eyelids apart for better access to the eye. You should use whichever method works best for you.

    Slide the Lens

Using your fingertips, gently slide the contact lens down to the bottom corner of your eye. As you slide, the lens should catch on your eyelid and start to fold--creating a sort of bubble that you can pinch with your fingers. Pinch the lens and gently pull backward. The lens should be between your fingertips. Some people can pinch their lens without having to slide them first, but you should get the hang of sliding before you try this route.

    Rinse and Put Away

Put the lens in your palm and give it a quick rinse of contact lens solution. You don't need to douse it, but just get it moist. This will wash away any excess impurities and let the storing solution in your case do a more effective job. Put the contact lens in the case and secure the lid tightly.

    Repeat

Repeat this same process with your other eye. You might find it more difficult this time because you can't see as clearly from the other eye. Take it slowly and always stop yourself if you're not getting it right away. Beginning users especially find taking the lens out takes time. There's no rush, especially when dealing with the safety of your eyes.
