Butea superba is an indigenous herb of Thailand, known also as kwao krua dang or red kwao krua. It is best known for its treatment of erectile dysfunction among males, and is widely marketed as a sexual enhancement aid.
Origin
Butea superba is a climbing plant from the Papilionaceae family. It blooms lovely orange flowers from February to March, but it is the stems and roots of the flowers which are harvested for medicinal purposes.
Benefits
Butea superba's alleged benefits include reducing the risk of premature ejaculation and increasing sexual desire. It is branded as an aphrodisiac that cures erectile dysfunction, impotence, weakness of erection and pain upon penetration.
Expert Insight
According to a 2003 study conducted by Chulalongkorn University, in Thailand, Butea superba "appears to improve the erectile function in ED patients without apparent toxicity.... Estimation of the sexual record indicated that 82.4% of the patients exhibited noticeable improvement."
Considerations
Though there are no known drug interactions with Butea superba, results may vary by individual. It is always advisable to consult a physician before beginning any herbal supplement.
Warning
Do not exceed recommended dosage; one study on rats conducted by the Chulalongkorn University discovered "possible adverse risk of overdose consumption of B. superba products."
