Triglycerides refer to fats that circulate in the blood. This is what happens to food that is not immediately converted to glucose for use by the body. Triglycerides are what get stored in the fat cells of the body.
What Are Triglycerides
Triglycerides in the bloodstream are normal. Normal levels of triglycerides are less than 150 mg/dL. Anything above this is considered hypertriglyceridemia and should be lowered.
Three Part Program
Reducing triglycerides involves diet modification, getting more exercise and potentially taking medicine prescribed by a doctor.
Food Considerations
Losing weight and reducing the amount of refined carbohydrates translates into less triglycerides in the blood. Also, an overall reduction in calories with special emphasis placed on reducing cholesterol, fat and eliminating trans fat from the diet.
Alcohol
Alcohol should be avoided as most alcoholic beverages contain large amounts of sugar and calories.
Exercise
At least 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily is recommended to help burn off excess calories to keep them from being converted into triglycerides.
Medications
Cholesterol medications may be prescribed if diet and exercise are not enough.
