If you are attempting to plug an Xbox 360 into a flat-panel television, you may have noticed that Microsoft sells its own branded cables. You may be wondering: What is the difference between those and any other HDMI cable?
Cable Length and Price
The Microsoft cables are 6.5 feet (2 meters) long and have an MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) of $49.99. An enterprising customer can find longer HDMI cables for much less online.
Optical/RCA Adapter
However, this package also includes a proprietary adapter that can connect your Xbox 360 to stereo RCA cables or an optical audio cable, in case your receiver system does not have an HDMI interface.
Separate Cables
On the other hand, this adapter can be purchased secondhand, allowing you to pick up an inexpensive HDMI cable and saving a substantial amount of money overall.
Customer Service
If you purchase a generic cable instead of the Microsoft cable, Microsoft may not be able to provide technical support, and you may have trouble obtaining repairs or replacement of your cable.
Bundling
Unfortunately, there is no version of the Xbox 360 that includes an HDMI cable in its packaging, although this may change in the future. If you want HDMI, you must purchase an HDMI cable separately.
