  • Satellite television relies on a series of satellites circling the Earth in order to deliver a signal from the broadcaster directly to the dish sitting on top of your house. Unlike cable, the line of sight from the dish to the satellite is extremely important to your television reception. Every now and then, a dish will get knocked off-line and will need to be reset.

    Television

Turn on the receiver and television. On the television, open the "Menu" and go into the "Setup" mode. There, select "Satellite" and go into a program called "Signal Status." This program will alert you with a sound once the satellite is aligned; you'll either have to turn up the volume on your television or have a friend stand near the television and let you know when it's aligned.

    Finding the Satellite

To align the satellite, first loosen the screws attached to it. You'll be able to move it slightly while staying in the same general direction. From there, it's a trial-and-error process until you locate where the satellite is pointed. Move it slowly and very slightly to make sure you cover the sky. You can also use websites such as DishPointer.com to help find out where your dish should be aligned.

    Stablizing the Dish

When you hear a buzz from the television alerting you that you've found the signal, stop moving your dish. When you feel you can maintain the buzzing sound, screw the dish back in to stabilize it. If the dish is stabilized and you can still hear the alert sound on your television, your dish will now be aligned.

    Call Your Provider

If that doesn't work, either repeat the above steps or contact your provider and have a service person come to help.
