  • POD, also known as publishing on demand, or print on demand, is a form of publishing that has some merits and as well as some drawbacks. With POD, less waste and lower costs have created a revolution in publishing.

    What is POD?

Print on demand differs from traditional publishing, known as batch publishing, because it allows books to be printed only when they are ordered. Traditionally, books were printed in batches of no fewer than 1,000 at a time.

    Benefits

POD only prints the number of books sold, so unlike traditional publishing there is no risk of ending up with extra copies of unwanted books.

    Digital Printing

Publishing on demand uses digital printing. Books published using POD are stored as a digital file in the computer system of the publisher's printing plant.

    Out of Print Books

Publishing on demand has the potential to ensure that no books will ever go out of print. POD allows publishers to make their backlist available indefinitely.

    Warning

There are some risks involved with POD, particularly for writers who are looking to self publish. Some POD companies charge high fees and do not offer quality products nor writer's support.
