  • Psychotic depression is a combination of the mental health condition of depression and hallucinations, both visual and auditory. Additionally, people suffering from psychotic depression may experience paranoia. This leads them to believe that their thoughts are not their own and are being read by others.

    Causes

Scientists have yet to determine what the exact cause of psychotic depression is, but typically associate the disorder with high levels of the cortisol hormone in the sufferer's blood.

    Risk Factors

Although there are no obvious risk factors linked to psychotic depression, it is believed that those who have a family history or depression and/or psychotic illness are more susceptible to psychotic depression.

    Symptoms

The symptoms that are common amongst those who suffer from psychotic depression are insomnia, cognitive impairment, agitation, anxiety, physical immobility, constipation and hypochondria.

    Treatment

Treatments for psychotic depression include hospital stays, and psychiatric evaluation by mental health specialists. Typically, patients are treated with antipsychotic and antidepressant medication.

    Prognosis

When properly treated by a qualified mental health professional, treatment is typically quite effective. Recovery can often be achieved within one year. Recurrence of depression symptoms is much more common than psychotic symptoms for those in recovery.
