Starting a business and becoming your own boss is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. But it can also be one of the most stressful. To start a business in Arizona, you need to complete several steps before you can operate.
Business Plan
Draft a business plan that clearly outlines the objectives of your business and how you intend to meet those objectives. Use this business plan to drive your operations, from choosing a business name and location to determining how much seed money is needed and hiring employees.
Business Name
Select a name for your business, and then register that name with the Arizona secretary of state.
Legal Structure
Determine the ownership structure of your business. If forming a corporation, non-profit or partnership, register with the Arizona Corporation Commission. Sole proprietors do not have to register.
Employer Identification Number
If you plan to hire employees, you will need to obtain an employer identification number (EIN) from the IRS.
State Tax ID
Register with State of Arizona Department of Revenue to obtain a state tax identification number.
Licensing and Permits
Make sure you have the proper licensing and permits to operate your business. The Arizona Department of Commerce lists required licenses and permits for each type of business of its website, azcommerce.com.
