SR22 insurance is required if your license has been suspended. It lets the state know that you have purchased the minimum liability insurance required.
Time Frame
In most states, the minimum time that you have to have SR22 auto insurance is three years. Each state is different, and the court can order you to hold the insurance for a longer period of time.
Penalty
It is very important to pay your SR22 insurance on time. If you allow your policy to lapse or be canceled, the insurance carrier will report this to the state department of motor vehicles and your license will be suspended.
Reasons
SR22 is required for drivers convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, driving without proper insurance, repeat traffic violations, having an accident that is your fault without insurance coverage and if your license is revoked or suspended for any reason.
Coverage
If you don't own a vehicle, but want to have a driver's license, you may be required to carry non-owner SR22. This policy will only cover the liability of the policyholder in the event of an accident. It will not cover damage to the vehicle that you are driving.
Benefits
SR22 insurance allows high-risk drivers to be able to get insurance in order to have their driving privileges reinstated.
