<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Some Products May Be Effective
Hair loss (alopecia) can occur for many reasons. Although many hair loss products exist, Rogaine and Propecia are the only two FDA-approved treatments for hair loss as of 2009. Rogaine (minoxidil) is a liquid you apply to your scalp twice a day; Propecia (finasteride) is a pill you take twice daily. Clinical trials have demonstrated that these drugs are often effective in halting or even reversing hair loss although results may take up to a year.
On the Other: Hair Loss Products Have Drawbacks
Women should not take Propecia. Propecia is also not recommended for men who have liver disease or prostate cancer. Neither Rogaine nor Propecia restores hair near the front of the hairline, so hair loss cannot be completely reversed. Both drugs have also proven less effective in older men.
Bottom Line
Consider the costs, risks and benefits before you decide to pursue treatment for hair loss. Consult your doctor before taking any medication to treat hair loss.
