A crime scene investigation is a procedure where a law enforcement agency collects and observes data related to a crime.
Scene Recognition
Scene recognition is when a crime scene investigator first arrives at the scene of a crime and observes the location. This observational period helps the investigator become familiar with the crime scene.
Extent of the Crime Scene
The extent of a crime scene is the area in which the crime was committed. This could be a small area, such as a house, or potentially as large as an entire city.
Core Area
The core area is where the most obvious details of a crime are present. This could be a room with easily observable evidence or where the victims of the crime are located.
Search Warrant
Once a crime scene is secured by law enforcement, a search warrant is obtained by law enforcement from the court. This grants law enforcement the legal right to search a building or facility.
Fun Fact
"CSI" is a popular television program. The show focuses on fictional accounts of crime and the investigation process.
