A cable splitter is a device that has two or more ports at one of its ends. It splits the electrical signal of a cable equally to all ports on the splitter. The most common use for a cable splitter is to run one cable television signal to two or more televisions.
Cable Splitters with Transformers
Cable splitters with transformers attenuate at approximately 3.5 decibels on each output port. This provides a clear signal at nearly the same quality as the original signal.
Cable Splitters With Resistors
Cable splitters with resistors are less expensive that those with a transformer but provide a lower quality signal. The original cable signal loses half of its signal quality at the input of the splitter.
Materials Used
For the best picture quality while using a splitter, use a cable made from oxygen-free wire. Oxygen-free wires lose the least amount of signal when split.
