Post-degree certificate programs range from 18 to 60 credit hours. Most are offered for traditional academic credit, and are more similar to earning a second bachelor's degree than a master's degree. Some institutions, however, offer continuing-education units rather than academic credit. George Washington University offers an 18-credit graduate certificate in paralegal studies, which is described as "stackable" in the program brochure.

Master's Degree Example

The Master of Professional Studies in Paralegal Studies offered by George Washington University is 32 credits. It is described as an "advanced credential to foster career growth, boost earning potential, and raise federal GS level." The program consists of four core courses, three specialties of two courses each, a practicum and a thesis. It may be earned either on-campus or online.
