  • A ParaGard is a non-hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) made of copper and plastic that prevents pregnancy. One ParaGard IUD can last up to 10 years.

    Pregnancy Prevention

A ParaGard prevents pregnancy in two ways: it stops sperm from being able to reach your egg, and it prevents the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterine wall.

    Pregnancy Preventions

No birth control method is 100 percent effective, and there is a small chance you may become pregnant while using ParaGard. If you do, there is an increased chance that your ParaGard IUD will cause pregnancy complications or a miscarriage if an experienced health care provider does not remove it as early as possible.

    Heavier Periods

Many women who use ParaGard IUDs experience longer, heavier periods than they did prior to using ParaGard.

    Complications

There is a small chance that a ParaGard IUD can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or a perforation in the lining of the uterus.

    Warning

ParaGard IUDs will cause an allergic reaction in anyone with a copper sensitivity.
