Identification
Formal paralegal courses are recommended, but you do not need any degree/certification to work as one. Although many choose to get their certification through formal educational training, some legal firms will train people on the job or promote their secretaries.
Considerations
Paralegal certification helps you land a job and advance in the industry, but firms usually require continuing education classes to maintain knowledge of updates in the legal world in order keep certification.

Formal paralegal programs at universities and colleges often require core curriculum, such as math and science, in addition to paralegal training. Paralegals also tend to take courses in research, legal terminology and computer aided investigation.
Interesting Fact
There are over 1,000 institutions that offer a paralegal degree/program, but only 260 are recognized by the American Bar Association.
