  • The A+ certification is offered by the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) to computer technicians who exhibit sufficient knowledge about computer hardware and software. The American National Standards Institute accredited all CompTIA certifications in 2007.

    Statistics

According to the CompTIA, about 700,000 people have earned the A+ certification worldwide since the program was introduced in 1993.

    The Test

The CompTIA A+ certification exam consists of two parts (available in English or Spanish): CompTIA A+ Essentials, and CompTIA A+ Practical Application. Each part requires test takers to answer 100 questions in 90 minutes.

    Versions

Subsequent versions of the A+ exam were released in 2003, 2006 and 2009. Most employers prefer that A+ technicians have the latest certification.

    Score

A person who gets a passing score--675 out of 900 in the Essentials test and 700 in the Practical Application--earns the title of "CompTIA Certified Computer Technician."

    Upgrade

A+ technicians can upgrade their certification either by taking a new exam or taking a bridge exam, which consists of 85 questions to be answered in 90 minutes. The passing score is 500 out of 900.
