A crime scene log keeps a written record of every visitor to a crime scene, including arrival and departure times. The log helps to preserve the integrity of the scene.
Information in the Log
Along with name, arrival and departure times, every visitor must record name, rank and purpose of visit.
Contamination
The chances for contaminating the crime scene rise with more visitors. The log is a way of preventing undocumented visitors from entering the scene.
Stabilizing the Scene
Stabilizing the scene or removing potential threats to responders and citizens and establishing and protecting the boundaries of the scene must precede the start of the crime log and the investigation of the incident.
First Response Officials
A police sergeant or higher official usually relieves the initial responders or patrol officers who have secured the scene. The sergeant surveys the area, sets up a command post if necessary, starts the crime scene log and notifies investigators.
Detective
The responding detective records time of arrival and begins interviews of other police at the scene and witnesses.
