  • A registered nurse (RN), has an important role in the health care system. An RN wears a lot of hats and has many responsibilities not only to patients but to other health care workers and to the facility where she works. Specific classes in a two- to four-year nursing program will be required.

    Pre-College Classes

To be an RN, start by taking the right high school classes. You will need to take English, algebra, geometry, biology, chemistry and social studies. It is recommended that you take physics and computer science.

    Science Classes

College classes in microbiology and anatomy will be taken. An RN student will learn about viruses, bacteria, diseases and the body's organs and their functions. Other core classes in chemistry, biology and physics will be required.

    Pharmacy Classes

Registered nurses will need to have taken classes in pharmacology. An RN needs to know how certain drugs affect the body, the different classes of drugs and how to administer these drugs.

    Nursing Theory

Classes in family nursing and psychology may be required, depending on the school you attend. An RN student will learn how to deal with families of sick patients. Many times, registered nurses have to teach families about disease prevention and general health.

    Business Classes

Registered nurses can become directors of nursing homes, so taking business classes will benefit an RN in this position. Knowing how to manage and interact with staff and how to problem solve is a bonus.
