Salsa is a vibrant and soulful dance that's as fun to perform as it is to watch. From beginners to professionals, true salsa lovers know what to wear to get the most out of their performance.
History
Salsa can trace its roots all the way back to 17th century England, but it was the Cuban influence that gave it its famous liveliness and sensuality.
Function
Salsa is an acrobatic and fast-paced dance. Salsa dancers need to wear clothes that are loose fitting and flexible.
Shoes
Because Salsa dancing requires many quick turns and complex foot movements, salsa dancers wear lightweight, flexible shoes that have leather or suede soles. Rubber soles are not typically worn, as they grip the floor and can cause injury as the dancer tries to move.
Men's Clothing
Men typically wear lightweight, loose-fitting pants and short- or long-sleeved dress shirts. Although salsa encourages lively attire, and many men wear bold-colored shirts, a common rule applies. The lady is always the star of the dance, and a gentleman's attire must not compete with hers.
Women's Clothing
Many women wear colorful, form-fitting dresses or tops. Skirts are knee-length or higher are flowy for added movement on the dance floor. Women commonly wear heels to add extra grace and sensuality to their dance steps.
