  • A sinus infection, also called sinusitis, is inflammation of the sinuses and nasal passages. Headaches, pressure in the eyes and nose, and puffiness in the face are symptoms of sinusitis. Although by itself sinusitis is not usually serious, it can lead to complications if left untreated.

    Open Airways

Drink plenty of liquids to help thin mucus and clear your nasal passages. Hot tea is a great choice and the steam helps clear your sinuses. Inhale hot steam in a bathroom or sauna. Take Mucinex, an Food & Drug Administration-approved product that lasts 12 hours. It contains guaifenesin, which is effective in thining mucus. Use a humidifier, especially in the room where you sleep to help clear your airways and keep your nasal passages from drying out. Apply warm compresses directly to the nose and face to open blocked sinuses.

    Reduce Inflammation

After your breathing is improved, attack the infection with over-the-counter sinus infection remedies. Try a decongestant tablet like Sudafed to help dry up the mucous blocking your nasal passages. If the condition persists more than a couple of days, visit your doctor and he can determine whether you need a prescription for an antibiotic. Use a saline nasal spray before you blow your nose to help clean out any mucous blocking your sinuses. Nasal sprays contain corticosteroids which reduce inflammation in the nasal passages.

    Soothe Symptoms

Relieve your headaches and facial pain with an over-the-counter analgesics such as acetaminophen (found in Tylenol) or ibuprofen (found in Motrin). Take ibuprofen to help decrease swelling and inflammation. All the medical treatments must be accompanied by drinking plenty of liquids, rest, and eating a healthy diet that includes fruits and vegetables.
