Horses are animals that require large amounts of food due to their size and work load. Horse feed costs vary considerably depending on the quality of feed and location of the feed supplier.
Daily Routine
Before you can calculate how much it will cost to feed your horse, you must evaluate your horse's daily activity. Horses in training for competition need more food than horses used for pleasure and minimal exercise.
Hay
A horse needs between one and two percent of its weight in hay each day. This means the average horse will eat 15 lbs of hay per day. This can cost between two and three dollars per day, depending on the weight and price of the hay bales.
Grain
Grain for horses includes sweet feed, pellets and a mix of both. Horses eat between three and eight pounds of grain per day. A 30 to 50 pound bag of grain will cost around eight to ten dollars.
Supplements
Depending on the supplements you wish to add to your horse's diet, you can spend anywhere from 30 to 100 dollars for a month's supply. Supplements may include de-wormers, beet pulp or performance vitamins.
Tips
Research your local feed stores to find the best prices and feed. When changing your horse's feed, do so gradually so his digestive system is not upset. Consult a veterinarian before adding supplements to the regular feed.
