  • Morality perhaps, and some sensible self interest. Bilbo wonders if he may have said more than he should to Smaug during their riddle-riddled conversation, and is unwilling to recount his adventure word for word to the eager and impatient Dwarves. "I am sure he knows we came from Lake-town and had help from there; and I have a horrible feeling that his next move may be in that direction." Bilbo also has an uneasy feeling as the company sit and talk by the wedged-open door into the mountainside. A premonition urges him to ask the Dwarves to shut the door, which they do, and only just in time - ....a blow smote the side of the Mountain like the crash of battering-rams made of forest oaks and swung by giants. ..... They fled further down the tunnel glad to be still alive, while behind them outside they heard the roar and rumble of Smaug's fury. .... This was the outburst of his wrath when he could find nobody and see nothing, even where he guessed the outlet must actually be. Hope this helps.
