    First chill the ingredients. Put the coke in the fridge and the rum in the freezer for at least overnight. Chill the glasses for a few hours, too.

    Fill a chilled glass 2/3 full of chipped or crushed ice, add 1 part of cold rum, and 2 parts of freshly opened cold coke. Garnish with a lemon or lime slice or twist and a maraschino cherry (I also add a splash of the cherry syrup). Serve with a straw.

    I always use Myer's rum- it has a nice robust flavor; most other rums are too subtly flavored. Another interesting rum to use is Captain Morgan, which is flavored with spices.
