Help answer this question below.
You are forcing your turnout. Your hip rotators are being pushed beyond what they are capable of doing naturally. You can always increase your flexibility, but there is just so much you can do in regards to your turnout. Your hips should not hurt you. If you are not careful, you could do real damage to your hips
I do stretches like that sometimes. I think you have moved past the point of stretching the muscles and are now stretching the joint.
Because your hips have to learn to be in an unatural position,
Muscles learn faster than bones and ligaments.
Can anybody ever compare to Bob Fosse? His style of dance is so unique and recognizable. He used the whole body, hands and chorus?

You're reading Whenever I do stretches for a center splits, like lying on my back and straddling the wall, my muscles don't hurt, but my hips do. Why?
Comments
ooooh. I always thought that was supposed to be a stretch for your muscles, not your joints, and that I was doing it wrong. It is a similar kind of pain to when I do a frog stretch. My hips do tend to hurt sometimes and do weird things whenever I do a developpe a la seconde. Do you know of any better stretches for center splits? I'm pretty flexible, but always wanting to improve!

The frog stretch is also for your turnout. Like Pumpkin says, you must be forcing it if you have pain in your hips. It is already effecting other things you do like your developpe a la seconde. I would have a dance P.T. look at your hips before things get any worse.

Thanks for your help. Is the frog stretch really bad to do? I guess I don't understand my body well enough. Sometimes my hips hurt when I do grande plies, especially in second. Whenever I do a developpe a la seconde on my left leg any higher than 90 degrees, it kind of cracks and it feels like my bones are grinding together. Not the kind of crack like in your first grande plie of the day. Maybe I should get it checked out.

It is not bad to do, it is bad to overdo. Don't have anyone sit on your legs or push them down. A little loosening up is okay, but it shouldn't hurt. Remember this is a joint not a muscle.

Yeah...the frog stretch kind of hurts sometimes. Even just turning out a lot hurts sometimes. Especially in plies. Like when I do a grande plie in second my hips hurt. Only one hip grinds and cracks, but both hurt in plies.
