"""BERLIN -- Police in Poland have recovered the infamous sign stolen from the front gate of the Auschwitz concentration camp and arrested five men, they announced Monday.
The "Arbeit Macht Frei" sign, which means "Work Sets You Free" in German and is synonymous with the Nazi camps of World War II, was stolen late last week from Auschwitz in Poland, police said Friday.
The theft prompted outrage around the world...."

Maybe Geld verdienen macht frei - but even then there are restrictions. It is ironic that becoming a wage slave will make you free - although in this case, there were no wages to the slavery.
When it comes to things that make you "frei" - I prefer this old adage: The best things in life are not free, they are fried"

I think I heard something on the radio today about that sign being stolen and then found by the authorities, I think they said broken into a few pieces. Do you have a link? Unbelievable.

Such a question without the context of murdering millions of people, would make sense. Through your own efforts you work to create a life for yourself which in turn creates more choices for you. Under the right conditions a person's willingness to work for what they want can create freedom.

However, this is written on a sign that hangs over entrance to an infamous Nazi death camp and will be forever viewed in that context.
