I Love some of these answers but in a more serious vein: it's a mystery and many stories abound. Logically one would assume he was still under the care of his parents until say 18 years or so doing what young kids did those days. After that he probably struck out to "see the world" some believe he travelled to western Europe; some say the Hamadi scrolls reflect that he was learning Gnosticism in Egypt as much of his teachings reflect the same philosophies as the Gnostics as well as the Essenes and even those of Jewish sage Hillel, the father of the Talmud.
That was his Gay Phase. He made a grand tour of all the hottest bathhouses in the Roman Empire, and had this drag act with the coolest costumes (you should have seen him impersonate Cleopatra). Unfortunately, the saucy tales of these exciting years were edited out of the Gospels, leaving us with the bland and lifeless story that we now have.
See the book "The Gospel According to Biff."
