Nearly every gym sports at least a few elliptical machines. They are a popular and safe way to get a good cardiovascular workout.
Definition
Also called a cross-trainer, elliptical machines simulate walking or running in such a way as to avoid strain on the joints. Ellipticals offer good cardiovascular workouts.
Function
An elliptical is used in a standing position, with your feet on the foot pads. By pushing down with your legs, the foot pads rotate, and the handle bars move backward and forward. Thus the lower body and upper body are engaged.
Resistance
By increasing the level of resistance, friction is imposed on the elliptical's motion, forcing the individual to exert more force, increasing the difficulty of the workout.
Slope
Some ellipticals are equipped with a slope adjustment which simulates walking up an incline. This requires additional exertion from the individual, and intensifies the workout.
Timer
Ellipticals are equipped with a timer, so the length of the workout can be monitored. Often the elliptical also has a readout for the number of calories burned, as well as indicators for mileage and heart rate.
