  • Dyson provides a line of vacuums that they claim are very high quality and capable of producting more power than other vacuums. However, the lifespan and quality of the vacuum will depend on how you take care of it and perform maintenance on it. While some of the recommended maintenance must be performed by a certified vacuum mechanic, you can do some simple jobs at home with minimal experience. Changing the post-motor filter is one of these simple jobs.

    Getting Started

To replace the post-motor Hepa filter on the vacuum, start by purchasing a new filter online or in your local area. Generally the filter has a lifespan of approximately four years, but any time your vacuum loses suction you will probably want to replace this filter. You will also want to replace the rubber seal that goes around the filter, so purchase one of those, as well. This seal tends to weaken with age or become damaged when removing the old filter from the housing. Once all of your items have been purchased, take your vacuum cleaner, the filter and the seal to a part of the house with room to work on the vacuum.

    Disassembly and Replacement

Remove the plastic cylinder that catches all of the debris when you are vacuuming. Press down on the release button as you normally would to remove the cylinder to empty it, remove the bin and set it aside. Under the cylinder you will see a plastic lid with a number of small slots. This is the lid to the Hepa filter and it will need to be removed. There are typically three small plastic hooks, one on the front and one on each side, that hold the lid in place. Take care when removing these hooks because they can weaken with age and easily be broken. If broken, a spare lid can be ordered. In fact, it is recommended that you order a spare if this is the first time you have replaced the post-motor filter, just in case. Once the plastic lid is removed, set it aside. Under the lid, you will see a piece that is typically blue in color with a white paper inside of it. This is the actual filter that you will need to pull out. Grab the piece on either side and gently tug outward. The piece should come out and when flipped over, you will see the dirty filter. Set the old filter aside for disposal and get the new filter. Look at the older filter for reference to determine which side the rubber seal needs to be attached to, and then place the new rubber seal on the new filter. Remove the sticky tape from the new seal and stick the rubber pieces around the perimeter of the filter. Once the seal has been applied to the new filter, simply insert the new filter back into the vacuum with the seal facing downward.

    Reassembly

After you have put the new filter in place, you must put the lid to the Hepa filter back on. Do this by lining up the lip of the lid with the inside back wall of the vacuum cleaner. Once the lip is lined up, press down gently on the top of the lid until you hear the distinct click of the locks clipping into place. Once the lid is back on, place the debris cylinder back onto the vacuum cleaner and you are ready to vacuum once again.
