Through innovation and mass-marketed products, having a wireless access point in your home is easier than ever. Even people who are not technically inclined can set up wireless Internet access at home.
Internet
In order to have wireless Internet available at home, Internet services must be procured through an Internet service provider (ISP). Cable, DSL and satellite options have become affordable, and perform much faster than dialup.
Router
Wireless Internet access points use a router, or a wireless access point. Depending on the number of computers in use in the home, an access point may be a good choice if one computer can remain wired to the modem. The more popular option is to utilize a wireless router that can provide wireless services without the need for a wired computer.
Connection
Using Ethernet cords, the wireless router is connected per manufacturer instructions to the cable, DSL or satellite modem. Wireless receiving capability must be available on the networked devices: laptops, desktop computers and smart phones.
Configuration
Many wireless routers come packaged with software that can be used to establish a connection between the device and the router. Some operating system software like Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 (as well as Mac OS X) come equipped with wireless configuration software.
Wireless
Completely wireless access, without the need for a router or modem, are being offered by mobile phone providers. These options use cellular broadband technology and a specialized card provided by the mobile phone company.
