  • Business cards are an important part of networking for businesses and freelancers. Cards can be made from laminate, paper, plastic or even specialty materials like DVDs to make them stand out among the rest.

    Home

Many small businesses and freelancers create their own business cards using a home printer and specialty card stock, available at many office supply and computer retail stores. Retailers offer a variety of card options: flat card stock, glossy stock or even magnetic cards that can be fed through a home printer. Black or color ink can be used to print on the cards, after a design is created in a graphics or word processing program.

    Commercial

Along with card stock, office supply stores also offer the ability to print custom business cards. Specialty business-card printing stores are also found online or locally by looking for companies that advertise custom printing, and are the best choice for printing large quantities.

    Process

At a commercial press, business card stock is selected by the customer, along with a font set, style and color selection. The cards are printed on the stock using either laser printing or standard typeset, depending on the customer's needs.

    Cutting

After printing, cards are cut per customer specifications using a die cut machine. Standard cards are 3.5 inches by 2 inches, though customers can specify nearly any size or select a shape from a commercial printer.

    Specialty

Specialty cards made of plastic or DVDs may require additional fees and selections at a commercial press.
