Produced by Merial, Frontline is an over-the-counter medication available from your veterinarian and at pet supply stores nationwide. When applied to your dog's skin, Frontline helps treat and prevent flea and tick infestations.
Function
Frontline enters the glands under your dog's skin and continuously releases its active ingredient, fipronil. When fleas and ticks come in contact with fipronil, the medication disrupts their nervous system and causes them to die, explains the National Pesticide Information Center.
Time Frame
Frontline kills fleas and ticks and prevents their return for approximately one month, reports Merial.
Size
Merial sells Frontline in packages that contain a three- or six-month supply of the medication.
Use
To use Frontline, you simply tear open one phial of the medication and squeeze the entire contents on to the back of your dog's neck, between its shoulder blades.
Considerations
Though rare, some dogs develop allergic skin reactions to Frontline, such as redness or swelling, reports Merial. Avoid using Frontline on dogs less than eight weeks of age.
