According to Amnesty International USA, the rate of sexual violence against women in Jamaica is very high. Sexual assault is the second most common cause of women's injury after assault. Furthermore, in October 2009, the U.S. State Department issued an ongoing violence warning for parts of Jamaica. Violent crimes occur regularly in Kingston and Montego Bay.

On the Other: Resort Areas Are Safe

When single women and tourists stay in resort areas, they are less likely to be victims of crime. Popular tourist areas that are safe with a guide are Dunn's River Falls and craft markets located near cruise ships. The police tightly control parts of Montego Bay and Runaway Bay, near the cruise ships.

    Bottom Line

Jamaica remains a popular tourist destination but it is currently an unstable. To be safe in Jamaica, do not venture out alone. Stay in your resort, near your cruise ship or travel on the buses provided by the resorts to your destinations.
