  • Adding a printer to a wireless network gives you the freedom to put that printer anywhere that's a few hundred feet from a computer. But both devices need the proper hardware to communicate.

    Wireless Adapters

Your computer needs a wireless adapter to connect to a wireless network. Sometimes this adapter is included in your computer. An external adapter is useful for getting optimal reception.

    Wireless Router

Your adapters need a router to create the wireless network. This router does not need to be in the same room as your computer or printer.

    Wireless Print Server

This is a device that connects to your printer's USB port with a short cable and wirelessly sends and receives printer communications. Alternatively, you can physically attach your printer to the wireless router.

    Wi-Fi Printers

Some printers have a Wi-Fi adapter built in. In this case, you do not need a wireless print server or a physical connection to the wireless router.

    Laptop Hardware

If your laptop does not have a wireless adapter built in, you can purchase one that is inserted into a card slot, or one that connects with a short USB cable.
