Websense was founded in 1994 by Phil Trubey. The company went public in 2000 and is identified as WBSN on the NASDAQ stock market.
Function
Websense software tracks individual Internet users and is able to block access to certain websites. The company's software also provides email security, prevents data loss and is able to protect identity.
Significance
Websense has garnered a larger share of the software security market with its purchases of SurfControl, a British software company, and Israel-based PortAuthority Technologies.
Size
Websense employs more than 1,200 people and reported revenues close to $300 million.
Considerations
Websense has been criticized by free-speech organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, for censoring free speech by limiting Internet access to people living in countries with repressive regimes, but Websense has denied these accusations.
