  • According to the Federal Trade Commission, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request once every 12 months. The information in your credit report may include where you currently live as well as previous addresses, payment history with creditors and accounts in good standing. To order a copy of your report from any of the three, you may use Annualcreditreport.com.

The three major credit bureaus have set up a central website, a toll-free telephone number and a mailing address through which you can order your free annual reports. Select your state of residence on Annualcreditreport.com and enter in your personal data. This information includes name, date of birth social security number and current address. Once completed, you may advance to the next option which is selecting the credit bureau you would like to request a credit report from first. Select Equifax from the list. Alternatively, you can mail a written request to: Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281 or call 1-877-322-8228. The Federal Trade Commission provides a credit report request form on their website. If you are applying online to receive a copy of your credit report, you will be able to immediately view the credit disclosure. However, if you request a copy in writing, Equifax has 15 days to mail the disclosure to you. The same 15-day turnaround applies if you are applying by phone.

Additional Entitlement to a Free Credit Report

If you are denied access to new credit such as a credit card, loan or insurance, or if you are denied employment based on your credit score, you may request a free copy within 60 days of denial as dictated by federal law. Your denial letter will include the name of the reporting credit bureau. If Equifax is listed, you may request your free report from them.
