Cholesterol polyps are found on the inside lining of the gallbladder. This condition is also called cholesterolosis. Sixty percent of all polyps found in the gallbladder are cholesterol polyps.
Causes
Deposits of cholesterol in the gall bladder cause cholesterol polyps.
Symptoms
Cholesterol polyps are noncancerous and do not usually cause any symptoms. In some cases, polyps may break away from the lining of the gallbladder and cause pancreatitis by blocking the common bile duct, or cause biliary colic by blocking the cystic duct.
Diagnosis
Because there usually no symptoms associated with cholesterol polyps, they are usually found during ultrasound procedures for abdominal pain related to other health conditions. Diagnosis may also be made through an x-ray of the gallbladder (oral cholecystography) or a CT scan.
Treatment
There is no treatment for cholesterol polyps when there are no symptoms present and the polyps are smaller than 1 centimeter. Larger polyps may become cancerous and are usually treated by removing the gallbladder (cholecystectomy).
Significance
There is no clinical significance of cholesterol polyps in the gallbladder.
