Flowers are one of nature's most beautiful creations, and they definitely help improve the look of any garden. However, flowers are not merely decorative. They serve an important function, both for their plant and for nature in general. Understanding their purpose can help you appreciate these beauties more deeply.
Reproduction
The most important part of the flower's function is reproduction. Reproduction takes place entirely in the flower of the plant, after which the seeds are spread and more flowers grow.
Process
The female part of the flower is at the base of the flower, from which extends a tube called the style, which is topped by a stigma. The male reproductive organ, the stamen, shoots pollen down into the stigma, which transports the pollen into the ovary, where reproduction begins.
Types
Some flowers are bisexual and can pollinate themselves. However, many flowers require pollen from different flowers of the same species to reproduce.
Spreading
Some plants that are unisexual can shoot their pollen into the air, where it will be carried by the wind to other flowers. However, other flowers must travel via insect from flower to flower.
Food
Flowers serve as a beginning step for the food cycle. Many insects, including bees, eat pollen from plants to survive. These insects serve as food for large predators, which help feed others.
