<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Recognized Benefits
An anticonvulsant drug used in therapy for partial seizures, Lyrica has been found by many fibromyalgia patients to reduce pain, allow more peaceful sleep and promote an overall feeling of wellness. In 2007, researchers at the European League Against Rheumatism noted that the positive effects of Lyrica could work for eight months or longer.
On the Other: Severe Side-Effects
Those who take Lyrica may experience weight gain, dizziness, swelling of feet or hands, depression, increased appetite, and problems with balance. Some patients report allergic reactions such as facial and tongue swelling and trouble breathing. While not minimizing the drug's effect on the fibromyalgia itself, these side-effects can alarm these patients to the point that they stop taking the medication completely.
Bottom Line
The number and severity of side-effects can appear to outweigh the benefits gained by taking Lyrica as a treatment for fibromyalgia. However, in such cases, your doctor can adjust your prescription and/or provide added treatment to alleviate these symptoms without reducing the medication's desired effect.
