  • There are a number of substances and environmental factors that studies show change DNA structure and cause cancer. Knowledge is the key to prevention.

    UV Radiation

Epidemiological studies link the majority of skin cancers with the ultraviolet (UV) radiation produced by the sun. Maintaining cancer preventative measures to avoid skin cancer from UV light includes using sunscreen, wearing a hat and sunglasses and covering exposed skin with clothing.

    Food

According to the National Cancer Institute, studies indicate that diets high in red meat, preserved meats and salt are likely to increase the risk for colon and stomach cancers. A diet that includes large amounts of fruits and vegetables can help prevent such cancers.

    Radon

A radioactive gas that has no color or odor, radon comes from the decay of uranium in rocks and soil. Radon can cause lung cancer for those with high levels of exposure, such as miners or individuals who live in a house on top of contaminated soil.

    Diesel Exhaust

Epidemiological studies show there is likely a link between exposures to diesel exhaust pollutants and lung cancer. It is, however, difficult to measure someone's exposure levels. Therefore, cancer preventative actions would mean avoiding the exhaust of large trucks, construction and farm machinery, buses, generators, ships and other diesel powered equipment.

    Other Pollutants

The National Cancer Institute states that farmers, crop duster pilots and pesticide manufacturers are very likely to develop cancer from prolonged pesticide exposure. Water pollution is another known cause of cancer. Avoiding such substances is the key to cancer prevention.
