Today there are millions of blogs available on the Internet covering all kinds of subjects. Anyone can create a blog using free online tools to record daily life, make a political statement or market a product, business or organization.
Definition
The word "blog" is a slang term for "web log." Blogs are comparable to open journals. They might have a specific theme--such as politics, travel or the environment--or serve as the blogger's personal diary.
Origin
When the Internet was first created, users had to know complicated HTML coding to create their own websites. According to PBS.org, in the late 1990s, programmers began developing websites to make it easier for regular people to create their own blogs.
First Blogs
Open Diary and LiveJournal were the first blog tools available on the Internet. Instead of creating code from scratch, users could fill in a blank form instead. Now anyone could create a blog, even with limited computer knowledge.
Popularity
In 2009, Thefuturebuzz.com reported that Technorati had indexed 133 million blogs since 2002.
Features
Today most blog tools allow users to do much more than write. You can upload music, photos, videos, slide shows and more.
