  • There was a time where you had to buy a printer for every computer in the house, but technology is making it easier for many computers to share one printer without requiring wires to be strung from room to room. Printing wirelessly from any computer in the house is not magic. It just takes some patience and a wireless network.

    Desktop

Set up your wireless network using a desktop computer. Your desktop is connected wirelessly to your router. Connect your printer to your desktop and give it permission to share on the network. This will now allow your printer to print from any computer in the house. The disadvantage of doing this is that your desktop must be left on and only one computer can use the printer at a time.

    Router Print Server

A router print server connects your printer to a port on the router and allows your printer to connect wirelessly with any computer within its range. With this device, you will not have to run your desktop all the time. Some servers also allow more than one user to use the printer at one time. You can get one of these gadgets for $45 to $65 as of December 2009.

    Wireless Printer

You can connect a wireless printer to your network if you have a broadband Internet connection and a router. The printer requires no cables and just needs you to turn it on within range of the router so it will automatically connect to your network. These types of printers usually have a 300-foot range. Something of this nature will cost you $100 to $200 as of December 2009.
