Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a major role in emotion and mood. Too little serotonin can lead to depression, while too much can be fatal.
Function
According to Joseph M. Carver, Ph.D, drugs used to combat depression can raise serotonin levels beyond the point of wellness. Excess serotonin can lead to a life-threatening condition known as serotonin syndrome.
Identification
Symptoms of serotonin syndrome include hyperthermia, tremors, confusion, sweating, insomnia, agitation, seizures, and chills. Serotonin syndrome can lead to coma and possible death.
Time Frame
Serotonin syndrome is more likely to occur when you begin taking a medicine. It usually resolves itself within 24 hours after coming off the inducing medication.
Prevention/Solution
If you develop serotonin syndrome, you will need emergency medical treatment, according to the Utah Poison Control Center. You will need to take medication that neutralizes or blocks serotonin.
Considerations
According to a study at Australia's University of Newcastle, you can't develop serotonin syndrome by overdosing on a single drug, but by taking two serotonergic drugs at the same time.
