Poser is a label that fits people who appear to be what they are not. A poser assumes an exterior that does not correspond to reality. Posers falsely smile for the camera regardless of their emotional state. Insincerity and pretentiousness are at their core.
Finacial Posers
Posers pretend they have more money than they do. They may take an entire paycheck and carry large amounts of cash in their wallet to impress people. They may lease a car far above their means in order to make people think they are wealthy.
Social Posers
Posers are expert name droppers. They make up stories of famous people they know and may exaggerate contact they have had with celebrities. They sometimes claim to be related to famous people. They brag about parties and social events they have attended.
Military Posers
Military posers pretend to have won metals and badges of honor in battle. This is a crime and is punishable by jail and fines.
Musical Posers
Milli Vanilli are among the most famous posers in music history. The duo was found to be lip synching their music on stage when the recording began to skip. They were forced to return their Best New Artist Grammy in 1990.
Athletic Posers
Fresno State University addressed the dangers of a scam involving imposters pretending to be Fresno State basketball players. They went door to door soliciting funds for a team trip to Japan in 2006.
