<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Yes, They Are Safe
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the material of choice to contain juice and other drinks. PET meets the standards for beverages for single and repeated use. Plastic bottles should be cleaned with hot, soapy water and dried thoroughly before each reuse.
On the Other: Bacteria Found
According to PlasticsInfo.org, bacteria were found in bottles that were refilled by elementary students. The source of the bacteria, however, was from poor hygiene, not because of the plastic itself.
Bottom Line
If properly cleaned and dried before reuse, plastic juice bottles are safe to use again. Most plastic bottles in the United States are intended to be thrown away after one use; however, they are safe to reuse if you wish to do so.
